RV Window Seal Leaking: Complete Repair Guide & Solutions

Opened up my RV window seals yesterday thinking I fixed the leak, but water's still dripping through during today's downpour — what did I miss? The rubber seals around the frames are obviously shot, all cracked and dried out looking.

I'm torn between two approaches here: should I take the time to completely remove the old seals and put in new butyl tape/rubber sealing, or can I just run some caulk over the existing stuff and call it good? Looking for the best long-term fix that'll actually keep me dry! …more

RV Alternator to Lithium Battery Charging: Complete DC-DC Wiring Guide for Safe Installation

Last week I picked up my 2007 Holiday Rambler and discovered the previous owner left the alternator-to-battery charging system a dangerous wiring disaster that could destroy my new lithium batteries.

I'm upgrading from four 6V lead-acid house batteries to lithium, and I keep reading conflicting advice about alternator charging. Some people say "just connect it directly," others are warning about alternator damage and proper current limiting. I'm planning to add a DC-to-DC charger eventually, but I'm confused about whether I can safely use the alternator to charge lithium batteries in the meantime.

What's the right way to handle alternator charging with lithium batteries? Should I disconnect the alternator feed completely until I get a proper charging system, or is there a safe way to make this work without turning my alternator into an expensive paperweight? …more

LiFePO4 Battery Not Charging in RV: Complete Diagnosis Guide 2024

Planning my next boondocking trip when this faint electrical burning smell started coming from my battery compartment, and my 950W flat mounted plus 1200W ground solar setup isn't charging my LiFePO4 batteries at all. My LiFePO4 batteries used to charge up beautifully, hitting 100% by late afternoon like clockwork.

Now? Total drama queens. This morning we woke up at 18% charge, and after a full day of glorious sunshine, we're sitting pretty at a whopping 63%. With 2150W of solar, I should be swimming in electrons! But instead my batteries are acting like teenagers - moody and refusing to cooperate.

I'm starting to suspect something's gone wrong, but honestly, I have no clue how to properly check LiFePO4 batteries. Are they actually broken, or am I just doing something monumentally stupid? What voltage readings should I be looking for, and what else should I check before I start panic-buying new batteries? …more

How to Fix Cracked Norcold RV Refrigerator Door Hinge: Complete Repair Guide

Walked out to my 2006 Newmar 3910 after that brutal heat wave last month and the plastic around my Norcold RV refrigerator door hinge has completely cracked and given way. The door is literally falling off now, though the actual hinge hardware still seems okay - it's just that the plastic frame around the hinge pin has failed.

I'm hesitant to attempt any repairs myself since we just invested in new guts for this unit to get both 120v and propane operation working. We're currently wintering in Temecula, CA, and I don't want to damage the door frame beyond repair or create a safety hazard. Are there reliable repair methods for this type of plastic failure, or am I looking at having to replace the entire door? I'm particularly concerned about whether the door frame can be saved or if attempting a repair might make the whole situation worse. …more

How to Fix Onan Generator That Won't Stay Running After Running Out of Gas

Halfway through our camping trip, my Onan 4KY-26100R generator on a 2018 Winnebago Spirit is doing something bizarre — firing up perfectly after running out of gas but dying within minutes. After refilling the tank and changing the oil, the generator starts but immediately shuts off when I release the start switch. Getting 3 flashes on the control switch indicating service required. Oil level is correct - halfway between add and full marks. Is this an air in fuel system issue from running out of gas? How long should I hold the start switch to get it running again? …more

Ford E450 RV Unused Engine Bay Plugs: Complete Identification Guide

Three different Ford techs want $400 for replacing this massive electrical connector in my 2017 E450 engine bay, but it looks completely unused to me. It's our chassis for a 2018 Sunseeker 2430S-CD, and this thing has been bugging me for months now - it's just sitting there unused with no obvious purpose.

I've been all through the manuals and can't find any reference to it. The RV runs great and I don't think we're missing any functionality, but seeing this big plug just hanging there makes me worried we didn't get something we paid for or that there's supposed to be some optional equipment connected.

Has anyone else dealt with these mystery connectors on Ford E450 chassis? I really need to know what this was intended for before I drive myself crazy thinking about it! …more

How to Cool Hot RV Window Frames: 7 Proven Heat Reduction Solutions

Three months into owning my first RV and I'm completely lost on why these black aluminum window frames are hitting 129°F in just 90° weather. I'm pretty sure I could get a nice sear on a steak if I tried.

I'm looking for the most effective ways to tame these heat magnets before they turn my RV into a mobile sauna. I've heard about exterior reflective covers, interior solutions with Reflectix, and I'm wondering what actually works best. Should I be blocking the sun before it hits the frames, or can interior covers do the trick? And how the heck do you attach exterior covers without them flying off down the highway like aluminum kites?

Any battle-tested solutions from fellow victims of the great window frame heat conspiracy would be much appreciated! …more

5 Best RV Sewer Hose Replacements for Presto-Fit Users (2024 Guide)

Noticed my Presto-Fit sewer hose replacement keeps disconnecting at the worst possible moments even though I installed it last week. After 20 blissful years with my trusty Presto-Fit sewer hose, it finally gave up the ghost. Of course, now that I need a replacement, they're nowhere to be found. It's like losing your favorite pair of underwear – you never realize how good you had it until it's gone!

I keep seeing names like Camco RhinoFLEX, Valterra Dominator, and Lippert Waste Master thrown around, but honestly, I'm drowning in options and contradictory reviews. Some people swear by thick-wall hoses, others talk about cam-lock vs bayonet fittings, and don't even get me started on the cold-weather flexibility debate.

What are the real top alternatives for us displaced Presto-Fit refugees? I need something reliable that won't leave me literally knee-deep in regret during my next dump station adventure! …more

RV Electric Steps Won't Lock Extended - Troubleshoot Lock Switch & Control Board Issues

Noticed my 2008 Tiffin Allegro Bay 35 TSB electric steps won't lock extended and keep retracting when I close the door — tackling this Saturday, what should I prep?

I'm concerned this could be a safety issue, and I don't want to start taking things apart without knowing what I'm doing. Could this be the lock switch going bad, or maybe something with the control board? I have a multimeter but I'm nervous about testing electrical components incorrectly. What's the safest way to troubleshoot this problem? …more

When to Buy a Used Class A Diesel Motorhome: Best Times for Deals

Pulled into three dealerships expecting to find a decent used Class A diesel motorhome within budget, but they're all quoting me $20K+ over what I can afford. When during the year do dealers typically have the best deals and inventory turnover?

Also curious about when to avoid shopping due to high demand and higher prices. Any insights on seasonal buying patterns would be helpful. …more

Hieha TPMS Review 2024: Complete RV Tire Pressure Monitor Test & Comparison Guide

Replaced my old TPMS last month but planning to install this Hieha system Saturday — should I worry about going budget for tire safety? I keep reading horror stories about tire blowouts and I don't want to risk my family's safety with unreliable equipment.

Has anyone actually used the Hieha brand long-term? I'm particularly concerned about accuracy issues and whether the sensors will actually alert me when there's a real problem. Are there better options I should be considering even if they cost more? I'd rather spend extra money upfront than deal with a roadside emergency later. …more

RV Water Heater Drain Plug: Use Teflon Tape or Not?

RV Water Heater Drain Plug: Use Teflon Tape or Not?

Since my 2016 Coachman Mirada Class A needs its water heater drain plug serviced — would this repair even be covered under warranty? During my pre-delivery inspection at the dealership, the tech pointed out that the previous owner had swapped out the original plastic drain plug on the Suburban water heater with some kind of aftermarket metal plug. He recommended I get the proper factory plastic plug installed before any camping trips. I've got the correct replacement part now, but I'm not sure about the installation process. Should I be wrapping the threads with Teflon tape before threading it in, or does the plug seal properly on its own? I want to make sure I don't create any leaks, but I also don't want to over-seal it if that's not how it's designed to work. …more
Adding Ball Valve to 2008 Fleetwood Terra Heater Line - Safe?

Adding Ball Valve to 2008 Fleetwood Terra Heater Line - Safe?

I turned off my RV's cooling system and grabbed my wrench — ready to install a ball valve on my 2008 Fleetwood Terra's heater line but need safety confirmation first. I've been battling what I suspect is a faulty electric heater valve that may not be closing completely when I switch to A/C mode.

The electric valve is expensive to replace and located in an incredibly awkward spot that's driving me crazy to access. I've tried everything - heat detectors, feeling around the lines, you name it - but I still can't definitively tell if it's actually sealing off hot coolant flow when the A/C is running.

Here's my question: Can I safely install a simple manual ball valve in the heater line before the existing electric valve? I'm hoping this would let me manually shut off coolant flow to the heater core when using A/C, essentially doing the job the electric valve should be doing. Will this cause any problems with the cooling system or damage anything? I just need to know if this is a safe solution before I start cutting into lines. …more
