Understanding RV Weight Terms

GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating)

The maximum weight your RV can safely carry when fully loaded, including the RV itself, passengers, cargo, fluids, and anything attached. Exceeding GVWR puts stress on your axles, brakes, tires, and frame. It's also illegal and voids your insurance.

Dry Weight (UVW)

Unloaded Vehicle Weight - the RV as it left the factory, without any fluids, cargo, or options. Note that dealer-installed options add weight not reflected in this number.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)

The amount of weight you can add: passengers, cargo, water, propane, and aftermarket accessories. CCC = GVWR minus Dry Weight.

Tips for Staying Within Limits

  • Travel with partial water tanks - Fill up at your destination instead of hauling full tanks
  • Weigh your RV loaded - CAT Scales at truck stops give accurate weights (~$15)
  • Check individual axle weights - Total weight can be fine while one axle is overloaded
  • Account for modifications - Solar panels, bike racks, and upgrades add up
