My multimeter's out and I'm ready to tackle this RV electrical mess myself — pretty sure the inverter's the culprit but need to know where to start. I have a 2000 Winnebago Ultimate Advantage with four deep cycle house batteries and recently installed a Xantrex 758 inverter to replace my old Freedom 15 unit. The first time I tried using the inverter power while unplugged from shore power, something very strange happened - a hair dryer in the bathroom started running by itself and wouldn't shut off when I tried the switch. I had to unplug it, and the handle was warm. The hair dryer appears to be ruined now.

When I bought the Xantrex 758, I paid around $725 for what I thought was a good unit, but I'm now learning there's a difference between modified sine wave and pure sine wave inverters. I wasn't aware of this distinction when I made the purchase, and it turns out the 758 is a modified sine wave unit. I've since heard that modern electronics, especially things like residential refrigerators, computers, and sensitive electronic components, can be damaged by modified sine wave power.

I'm really concerned about potentially damaging my new residential refrigerator, stereo system, and computer equipment. Should I be worried about using this modified sine wave inverter with modern RV electronics? Is the hair dryer incident a sign that I need to upgrade to a pure sine wave unit, or are there other factors that could have caused this problem? Turned the key and nothing works on 12 volt — no lights, no water pump, no slides. Batteries show 12.6 volts on the multimeter so they're fully charged. House batteries seem fine but zero power is getting to any of the 12V circuits inside the coach. …more

About my 2007 Fleetwood Bounder: the MagnaSine MS2012 manual claims it should handle my loads perfectly, but this inverter keeps failing on me anyway. It's been acting up for months now - the microwave keeps causing it to hiccup and shut off, then it comes right back on. I know it's only going to get worse from here.

I've been looking at upgrading to something more reliable, maybe a Victron or another brand, but I'm honestly overwhelmed by all the options out there. What are the best replacement inverters that other RVers have had success with? I just want something that's going to work consistently without all these random shutdowns.

Finally got a second opinion after my RV tech insisted I need an $800 replacement for my entire Magnum MS2012 inverter just because it won't charge my 2011 Fleetwood Providence's battery. I've got dual Magnum MS2012 inverter chargers that seem to charge the batteries fine through all the stages, but once they reach float mode, the voltage just keeps dropping and the chargers won't kick back in to maintain them.

I've already replaced all the batteries (both coach and chassis), cleaned and tested every solenoid I can find, and I'm still having the same issue. The coach is plugged into shore power, so that's not the problem. I've been digging through the control panel menus looking for float settings but I'm not finding what I need.

Finally moved into an RV with a 20-year-old Tradewinds inverter/charger unit that's completely dead and I have absolutely no idea how to replace it. The repair shop is offering a used Magnum MS2812 (2800VA) for $700 installed, but I'm concerned about its actual charging capacity versus my requirements.

Looked inside my battery compartment and immediately hit with that acrid sulfur smell - my East Penn 6V AGM batteries are completely dead after a deep discharge. Last July, I installed six East Penn 6V house batteries and set the Magnum remote to AGM type. Left my coach at a shop for 2.5 weeks and came back to completely dead batteries - we're talking 8V dead, folks. Nothing worked: steps, lights, even my fancy electric shades decided to take a permanent nap. Chassis batteries were still okay.

After plugging in at home, the Magnum charger went through its whole song and dance - bulk charging at 100A, then eventually settled into float at 13.2V. When I unplugged and fired up the generator briefly, voltage dropped from 13.0V to 12.7V.

So here's my million-dollar question: did my deep discharge adventure turn these batteries into expensive paperweights, or do these voltage readings suggest they might have survived my negligence? Replaced the DC connections on my Monaco Cayman's Magnum ME2012 inverter per the manual, but I'm still getting 50 amp fault codes and breaker trips. The remote console is consistently showing a 50 amp reading, which I know isn't normal operation. When I watch the unit go through its self-test sequence, it connects initially but then flashes several times before failing completely. The fault light starts flashing on and off intermittently, and eventually the shore power breaker trips entirely.

I'm upgrading my RV from AGM to gel batteries (specifically the NAPA 8272 model) and I've got a Magnum inverter controller that has a gel battery setting. Someone at the RV dealer mentioned I should double-check something called the 'absorb time' setting to make sure it matches my new batteries, but I'm honestly not sure what that means or how to find the right number.
