RV Black Tank Not Holding Full Capacity: 7 Common Causes and DIY Repair Solutions

Somewhere between embarrassed and desperate, I have to ask this probably dumb question: why does my RV's black tank act full when it should hold way more? We have a 40-gallon black tank, but when I try to fill it with water for cleaning, it starts overflowing through the vent pipe at only 23 gallons. I'm afraid there might be something seriously wrong with the installation or that I could damage the system.

A professional cleaning service said the tank was completely clean with no blockages, so I'm confused about why it won't hold its full capacity. The water is definitely coming out the vent pipe, so I assume that means the vent isn't blocked? I'm hesitant to keep trying things without understanding what's actually causing this - could this be a safety issue or sign of improper installation? What should I be looking for to diagnose this safely? …more

How to Fix RV Fresh Water Tank Leaks: Complete Diagnosis & Repair Guide

Nobody warned me how tricky RV fresh water tank leaks could be — got my tools ready and determined to fix this dripping mess under my trailer myself. The dripping was pretty steady at first but seems to have slowed down overnight to just occasional drops. My tank gauge still shows full, so I don't think it's completely emptying out.

I can see there's an underbelly cover that would need to come down to access everything underneath, but I'm hoping maybe there are some easier spots I should check first? I'd rather not tackle removing panels if I don't have to - any guidance on where these leaks typically start would be really helpful, especially near the drain valve! …more

RV Heater Lines Reversed: How to Diagnose and Fix Hot Dashboard Air

Dashboard vents are blowing hot air even with the heater off and the AC running. Drove three hours in 95-degree heat with hot air hitting my face the whole time. Mechanic says the heater hose lines might be reversed from a previous repair job. …more

Why Your RV Generac Diesel Generator Shuts Off After 2 Minutes Under Load: Troubleshooting Guide

Found that ever since those heavy rains last month hit, my 2007 Alfa's Generac 7.5kw diesel generator shuts down exactly 2 minutes after firing up the basement AC.

Just did a full service (oil, filters, the works) so it's not basic maintenance stuff. I can restart it right after it shuts off, but if the AC is still calling for power, it dies immediately again. No error codes or blinking lights to give me a clue.

Is this a fuel delivery issue where it can't keep up with the AC load? Or am I looking at something else entirely? Really hoping someone's dealt with this exact same 2-minute thing before! …more

Coleman Mach AC Leaking Water Inside RV: Complete Troubleshooting Guide to Stop Drips

I'm planning my weekend getaway when I spotted water dripping from my Coleman Mach air conditioner model 49003A879 that definitely wasn't there yesterday. I'm in Myrtle Beach, with super humid conditions (90s with crazy humidity) and getting pea-sized water drops falling from the ceiling vents at maybe 2 drops per minute, which doesn't sound like much but it's making puddles on my floor.

I've been keeping the main ceiling vents mostly closed to push more air to the back of the coach. Climbed up on the roof expecting to find some fancy drain pump or tubing system, but honestly don't see much of anything obvious.

Is this just how these Coleman units work, or am I missing something? Really hoping this isn't a 'deal with it' situation, but wondering if my closed vents are screwing up the airflow or if there's actually a drainage problem I need to fix. …more

RV Gray Tank Draining Slowly? Fix Clogs & Flow Issues

Called around to shops about my 2019 Forest River Cherokee's gray tank drain crawling—what used to take 5-10 minutes now drags on for 30-45 minutes. The black tank still drains at normal speed, so I don't think it's a problem with the main sewer connection or hose.

I'm wondering what typically causes gray tanks to develop drainage problems over time. We do a lot of dishwashing in the RV and I'm thinking maybe grease or soap buildup could be creating blockages somewhere in the system. The flow starts out okay but quickly reduces to just a trickle, even though I know there's still plenty of water in the tank.

What are the most common culprits behind slow gray tank drainage, and what's the best approach for diagnosing and fixing these flow issues? I'd rather understand the root causes and proper solutions before I start taking things apart or using harsh chemicals that might damage the system. …more

Ford E-450 Class C RV Front Squeak: Complete Diagnosis Guide for Brake

Between leaving my campsite last night and starting up this morning, my Ford E-450 Class C developed this awful front-end squeaking that definitely wasn't there before. My 2004 E-450 Class C with 54k miles has developed a squeak coming from the front end, and I'm not sure how to figure out what's causing it.

The squeak seems to happen at different times - sometimes when I'm braking, other times when going over bumps or rough roads. I've heard it could be anything from brake issues to suspension problems, but I honestly don't know how to tell the difference or what to check first.

Could someone help me understand how to properly diagnose where this front squeak is coming from? I'd really appreciate any step-by-step guidance on what to look for and how to identify whether it's a brake problem versus suspension issue. …more

RV Cabinet Makers & Repair Shops Near Jayco Middlebury, Indiana - Local Resources

Apparently I need to check if my Jayco warranty covers cabinet repairs before I start tearing into these furniture issues myself. I have a Jayco motorhome and need a custom dinette built to replace the original one. I'm wondering if Jayco builds their cabinets in-house at their factory, or if they contract out to local shops?

More importantly, I'm looking for recommendations on where I can get this work done. Are there independent cabinet shops in the Elkhart-Middlebury area that specialize in RV woodwork? I have all the detailed dimensions from Jayco and am hoping someone can share contact information for local cabinet builders who might be able to help. Any advice or contact details for reputable RV cabinet makers in that area would be really appreciated! …more

F53 Chassis Oil Fill Adapter - Stop Spilling Oil on 2021 RV

Pulled my 2021 RV with F53 chassis out of winter storage and like clockwork, I'm facing the same oil-change nightmare that leaves me swimming in spilled mess. That fill tube is positioned in the most awkward spot possible - feels like Ford designed it just to mess with us DIYers!

I keep spilling oil everywhere when I'm pouring from quart bottles. There's gotta be some kind of funnel adapter or trick that actually works for this specific setup, right? Anyone found something that makes F53 oil changes less of a disaster zone? …more

RV Power Steering Fluid Leak: Why It Stops & How to Fix Overfull Reservoir

Already driving myself crazy — my RV's power steering fluid only leaks when it hits 80+ degrees but works perfectly in cooler weather. A few months back, I noticed my power steering reservoir was doing its best impression of a leaky faucet - not enough to actually drip on the ground (because that would be too obvious), just enough seepage around the hose connection to make me paranoid.

Being the procrastination champion that I am, I figured I'd deal with it 'later' and just made sure I had extra fluid on hand. Well, 'later' finally arrived, and now I'm scratching my head because the leak has completely vanished! Poof! Gone! Like it never happened. But here's the kicker - when I actually checked the fluid level for the first time in three years, it's overfull by a decent margin.

So what gives? Did my RV just perform some kind of self-healing miracle, or is there actually a logical explanation for why a power steering leak would start and then mysteriously stop on its own? And more importantly, could that overfull reservoir be connected to this whole disappearing act? …more

Fix Newmar Water Tank Overflow at 20% - Complete Guide

I got the fresh water tank filled on our 2018 Newmar New Aire yesterday but something still doesn't seem right — it overflowed through the vent at only 20% on the gauge. Every time I try to fill the fresh water tank, it starts overflowing through the overflow vent when the tank gauge shows only 20% full. This seems dangerous and wasteful - we can't get enough water for our family of four. I'm really concerned there might be a serious problem with the tank or plumbing system that could affect our safety on the road. Has anyone experienced this issue before? I need to know if this is something I can fix myself or if I should cancel our trip and head to a repair shop immediately. …more
