Ford V10 Triton Engine Maintenance Guide: EGR Delete vs Regular Service Tips

Spent years doing regular EGR maintenance on my old gas motorhome without issues — but this 2007 Fleetwood 31' Tioga with Ford V10 Triton has me second-guessing everything. I keep reading conflicting information about EGR delete procedures on V10 engines, and I'm worried I might make things worse if I mess with it.

Is the EGR delete modification actually necessary on this 2007 3-valve V10, or am I overthinking this? I don't want to void any warranties or create problems that weren't there before. Would I be better off just sticking to regular maintenance instead of modifications? I'm looking for reassurance that I'm taking the right approach to keep this engine running reliably for years to come. …more

Ford V10 Turbo Kit for Motorhomes: Cost, Risks & Better Alternatives

Before every camping season rolls around, I face the same dreaded reality with my Ford V10 motorhome crawling up mountain passes like a wounded turtle. What are the realistic costs involved? Are there major risks to the engine I should know about? Is this actually worth doing or should I look at other options? …more

Ford F53 V10 RV Chassis Repair Shops Near Raleigh NC - Engine Service

My Ford F53 V10 is showing misfire codes P0301 and P0303, but my compression test reads 180 PSI when everything says it should be around 150 PSI. I'm located near Raleigh, North Carolina, and I need to get some mechanical work done - specifically repairs to the exhaust manifold bolts and air conditioning system work.

The problem I'm running into is that when I call Ford dealerships in the area, they keep telling me they don't work on motorhomes, even though it's a Ford chassis. This seems crazy to me since the engine and drivetrain components should be the same as other Ford vehicles. The exhaust manifold issue and AC problems are fairly standard automotive repairs, so I don't understand why the Ford connection isn't helping me here.

What type of repair facilities should I be looking for instead? Are there specific shops or service centers near Raleigh that specialize in F53 chassis work, or should I be approaching this differently? I just need somewhere that can competently handle these mechanical repairs on my motorhome without the runaround. …more

Cummins ISL Code 1896: EGR Valve Controller Gaskets & Repair

About to drop $2,800 on my Cummins ISL throwing code 1896 for EGR valve controller out of calibration and wondering if I can tackle this myself. Planning to pull and clean the EGR valve controller to see if that clears it up.

Do I need to order replacement gaskets before I start this job? Want to make sure I have everything on hand before I tear into it. …more

Onan 4000 Generator Won't Start Without Choke: Code 14 Troubleshooting Guide

Halfway through another camping trip and trying to decide between babying my Onan 4000 with manual choke every startup or finally fixing this Code 14 nightmare. Let me try again:

Just found out that my 2013 Thor Class C's Onan 4000 generator won't cooperate after sitting since March, and I'm dealing with a nightmare. Been getting Code 14 errors and spent half the morning just trying to get it fired up.

The only way I can get it started is by manually messing with what I think is the choke linkage - otherwise it just won't go. Once I shut it off, same story - won't restart unless I physically manipulate that linkage again. Only has 240 hours on it and was serviced about 2 years ago.

I'm pretty sure the carburetor is gummed up from sitting, but what exactly does Code 14 mean? And more importantly, what do I need to clean to get that choke working automatically again? I really need to get this thing running properly before our next trip! …more

Ford F53 460 EGR Valve Cleaning Guide - Fix Motorhome Stalling Issues Now

Despite probably being a dumb question, why does my 1997 Ford F53 with the 460ci keep being such a real pain lately? Keeps stalling out when I'm sitting at lights or just idling around. This happens every 400-600 miles like clockwork - runs great for a while, then boom, stalling starts up again.

I'm pretty sure it's the EGR valve getting all carboned up because I've seen this pattern before. The thing is, I'm getting tired of dealing with this over and over. Should I just clean the EGR valve again, or is there a better long-term fix? I've heard people talk about EGR deletes but not sure if that's the way to go with the ECU and all that. …more

Ford V10 Multiple Coil Codes Driver Side: Diagnosis & Repair Guide

Ford V10 Multiple Coil Codes Driver Side: Diagnosis & Repair Guide

Somewhere under the hood of my 1999 motorhome's Ford V10 there's a complete light show of coil codes P0351, P0353, P0355, P0357, and P0359 blinking across the entire driver side bank. Power and ground tests at individual coils show normal readings, and visual PCM inspection reveals no obvious damage.

Given that all affected coils are on the same bank, I suspect this isn't a coincidence of multiple simultaneous coil failures. What are the most likely common failure points that would cause multiple coil codes specifically on one engine bank? Should I be focusing on shared wiring harnesses, common ground points, or PCM driver circuits before replacing individual components? …more

Ford F53 V10 Engine Surging: Quick Diagnosis & Cheap Fixes for RV Owners

Ford V10 P0420 Code and Engine Surging: Exhaust Manifold Diagnosis Guide for RV Owners

Opened my wallet for a new catalytic converter, cleaned the MAF sensor, checked every vacuum line, and swapped the fuel filter on my 2014 Ford V10 motorhome — still getting P0420 codes and intermittent surging. Some days it runs absolutely perfect, smooth acceleration and no codes. Other days, especially during acceleration, I get this annoying surging that makes driving unpleasant, and that's when the P0420 code shows up on my scanner.

I've been methodically working through potential causes and have replaced quite a bit already: new MAF sensor, both upstream and downstream O2 sensors, checked fuel pressure (it's good), tested plugs and coils, cleaned the throttle body thoroughly, and even replaced the right side exhaust manifold gasket after noticing some seepage there. Despite all this work, I'm still getting the same P0420 code and surging, and my scan tool consistently points to issues on the right bank.

What's really puzzling me is the connection between the surging and the P0420 code - they seem to occur together. Could there be something I'm missing with the exhaust system that would cause both symptoms? I've already addressed the right side manifold, but I'm wondering if there's more to this V10 exhaust system that I should be checking. …more

Cummins 400 Throttle Power Loss: ECM and Other Causes

Standing here looking at my first RV with a Cummins 400 that loses power whenever I hit the throttle, leaving me crawling up hills at 35mph while everyone flies past! My Cummins 400 has developed this charming habit of suddenly losing all throttle response. One minute I'm cruising along just fine, the next minute the pedal might as well be connected to my hopes and dreams - completely useless.

It just sits there maintaining 50mph no matter how much I stomp on it. Occasionally the RPMs will jump to 2000 and I get a brief taste of actual power before it drops back down like my expectations for this rig. The worst was climbing out of Death Valley at a blazing 15mph - I'm pretty sure I saw a tortoise give me a dirty look as it passed.

My kid thinks it might be the ECM, but honestly at this point I'm open to suggestions that don't involve selling a kidney. Anyone dealt with similar power loss and throttle issues on a Cummins 400? …more

1995 Ford F53 460 Engine: Identifying EGR and PCV Valves | RV Repair Guide

Around 30 years into owning my 1995 Ford F53 with the 460 7.5L engine, I'm completely lost trying to locate the EGR and PCV valves. There are two valves that I can't identify - I'm pretty sure they're related to emissions control based on where they're located, but I'm not certain.

I think one might be an EGR valve and the other could be a PCV valve, but honestly I'm not confident in my identification. Should these valves be making any noise during normal operation? I want to make sure everything is working properly, but as someone newer to this, I'd really appreciate some guidance on what these components actually are and how they should behave. …more

RV Transmission Problems: Troubleshooting Guide & Quick Fixes

Planning to fix my Class A motorhome's transmission myself, but my neighbor says it needs fluid, the dealer insists it's the torque converter, and YouTube swears it's the solenoid pack. On my 4R100 transmission specifically, the transmission has been shifting a little rough lately, especially when accelerating from a stop or when climbing hills. Sometimes it seems to hesitate before shifting into the next gear, and I've noticed the engine RPMs climbing higher than usual before it finally engages.

I've owned this RV for about three years now, and I'll admit I haven't been as diligent about transmission maintenance as I probably should have been. The fluid looked a bit dark the last time I checked it, but I'm not entirely sure what I should be looking for or what the proper procedure is for checking transmission health. I've heard horror stories about transmission rebuilds costing thousands of dollars, so I want to make sure I'm approaching this systematically rather than just hoping the problem goes away.

What's the proper first step when you suspect transmission problems? Should I be taking it straight to a shop, or are there some basic diagnostic steps I can handle myself before spending money on professional diagnosis? I want to make sure I'm not missing something simple that could save me a lot of headache and expense down the road. …more

Ford V10 Crate Engine Problems: Rough Idle & Power Loss

Opened my RV hood this morning and my Ford V10 crate engine is doing that rough idle and power loss thing again — only when it's above 85°F outside. My 2015 Bounder 35K with 27k miles needed a complete engine replacement, so I had a new Ford V10 crate engine installed. Now I'm dealing with really rough idle, loud engine noise, shaking during acceleration, and hardly any power.

The shop said they fixed a misfire by replacing a fuel injector, but the problems are still there. Now they're telling me they've done everything they can with the engine and that it must be a transmission issue causing all these symptoms. Does that sound right to you experienced folks? I'm just having trouble understanding how transmission problems would cause such rough idling and engine noise, but I honestly don't know enough to argue with them. …more

1995 Ford F53 460 Engine Stalling: How to Replace Ignition Control Module for RV Reliability

Woke up this morning hoping my 1995 F53 motorhome with the 460 7.5L would run smooth after replacing the ignition control module yesterday, but it's still stalling randomly. It keeps stalling every time I come to a stop - literally dies on me at around 5mph just as I'm braking. The power steering goes out and it's a real struggle to get stopped safely.

I can restart it immediately and it runs fine as long as I keep giving it gas, but this happens at EVERY stop sign and red light. Currently, it won't start at all - just cranks with no spark. I previously had an EGR code 334 that went away after replacing the EVR sensor.

My fuel pressure gauge was showing 30-32 psi at idle and about 40 psi at wide open throttle. When I tested the vacuum line on the fuel pressure regulator, no fuel spilled out and the pressure didn't change.

I've already replaced many parts (including distributor cap, plugs, wires, EGR valve, ICM, fuel pressure regulator) with only 2,000 miles on them. I discovered that swapping the ignition control module seems to temporarily fix the issue - it starts with a new ICM but dies when I return to the original one.

I'm really concerned about potential highway driving with these intermittent starting problems. Is this a common issue with these 460 engines? …more

Ford F53 Engine Damage from Clogged Catalytic Converter

Halfway through climbing a steep grade yesterday, my Ford F53 motorhome engine started making a violent rattling sound under acceleration and now it's completely seized up. My Ford F53 motorhome experienced gradual performance decline over two years - fuel economy dropped from 5.5 MPG to 4.3 MPG near Mobile, Alabama, with increasing transmission downshifting under load. Using Forscan, I checked for diagnostic codes and replaced plugs and coils while in Gulf Shores, but issues persisted.

During a hill climb near Meridian, Mississippi, the catalytic converter catastrophically failed, creating severe exhaust backpressure. I drove approximately 500 miles home, including a challenging stretch on I24/I69 where I was reduced to 30 mph uphill, with the engine running against significant backpressure and likely experiencing oil starvation conditions.

The repair shop confirmed extensive damage and offered two options: rebuild the existing motor or replace with a remanufactured engine. The total cost difference was relatively minor - around $18,500 for comprehensive repair versus $3,500 for catalytic converter replacement.

The question is whether I made the correct technical decision to replace the entire engine rather than attempt a rebuild. Given the extended operation under these conditions, was complete engine replacement justified from a mechanical standpoint? …more
