RV MPPT Solar Controller E1 Error Code: Causes & Fixes

Halfway through troubleshooting my MPPT solar charge controller's E1 error — would this be covered under warranty, or am I stuck paying out-of-pocket? The controller was working fine for months, but now it's completely stopped charging my batteries and just displays this E1 fault code on the screen.

From what I've read, this could be related to battery over-voltage conditions or possibly some kind of wiring fault, but I want to make sure I understand all the potential causes before I start troubleshooting. I'm comfortable doing basic electrical work myself, but I also want to know when this might be something that requires professional attention for safety reasons.

Can someone provide a detailed breakdown of what the E1 error specifically indicates, walk me through the proper diagnostic steps to identify the root cause, and explain the repair process? I'd especially appreciate guidance on how to safely approach this troubleshooting and what warning signs would indicate I should call in an expert instead of attempting the fix myself. …more

RV Shore Power Not Working: Complete Troubleshooting Guide

Plugged into shore power at the campground last night and absolutely nothing happened — no lights, no AC, nothing. Breaker on the pedestal looks fine and my neighbor's rig is running perfectly on the same circuit. Starting to wonder if something fried inside the transfer switch. …more

RV Water Pump Running But No Water? Complete Troubleshooting Guide 202

Finally looking at my RV water pump right now and it's running constantly but there's absolutely zero water coming out of any faucets. However, when activating any fixture throughout the system, the water pump initiates and runs continuously without producing water flow at any outlet point.

All system components appear to be functioning mechanically - pump motor engages properly, electrical connections are secure, and there are no visible leaks in accessible plumbing runs. The symptom manifests uniformly across all water delivery points including kitchen, bathroom, and exterior service connections.

What diagnostic steps should be performed to identify the root cause of this no-flow condition despite continuous pump operation? …more

How to Fix Cracked Dometic RV AC Covers & Roof Vents: Complete Repair

Already tried following a YouTube tutorial to fix the cracked Dometic air conditioner cover on my 2022 East to West 1900MMK travel trailer but somehow made the crack even worse. What are my repair options - can I fix the crack or should I replace the whole cover?

Also dealing with a broken cap on the roof tank vent. I'm curious about material choices - I've noticed galvanized steel can rust, while PVC seems to degrade in sunlight. What are the pros and cons of different vent cap materials? What's a reasonable price range for replacement?

Looking for practical solutions for both issues. …more

RV Sewer Hose Freezing Temperature & Cold Weather Protection

RV Sewer Hose Freezing Temperature & Cold Weather Protection

Nobody can seem to agree on whether I should winterize my RV sewer hose system now or wait until temperatures actually threaten my specific setup. Current setup involves a dual-hose configuration with approximately 30 feet total length running to septic connection point.

Critical issue: The final two feet of hose rises approximately two inches above the main run elevation before connecting to the septic inlet. This creates a low point where effluent can accumulate rather than draining completely. Overnight temperatures are forecast to drop to 25°F for the next 48 hours.

What is the precise freezing temperature for RV sewer hoses, and does the uphill section with potential standing water create additional freeze risk at this temperature threshold? …more

How to Store LiFePO4 Batteries in Winter: RV Cold Weather Battery Guide

How to Store LiFePO4 Batteries in Winter: RV Cold Weather Battery Guide

Somewhere along the way, the previous owner of my newly purchased RV completely abandoned proper winter storage for these LiFePO4 batteries through multiple harsh seasons. My battery documentation shows a storage temperature range of 14° to 122°, which concerns me since Spokane winter temperatures tend to drop within 10° of zero.

The batteries are currently located under the entry steps, and I'm considering three options:
1) Leave batteries in the coach and risk potential damage like case cracking
2) Install heating pads or battery blankets
3) Remove and store batteries indoors

I'm leaning towards removing the batteries indoors, but I'd appreciate input from those with experience. Can anyone talk me out of this approach or confirm it as the best strategy? …more

Ford E450 RV Unused Engine Bay Plugs: Complete Identification Guide

Three different Ford techs want $400 for replacing this massive electrical connector in my 2017 E450 engine bay, but it looks completely unused to me. It's our chassis for a 2018 Sunseeker 2430S-CD, and this thing has been bugging me for months now - it's just sitting there unused with no obvious purpose.

I've been all through the manuals and can't find any reference to it. The RV runs great and I don't think we're missing any functionality, but seeing this big plug just hanging there makes me worried we didn't get something we paid for or that there's supposed to be some optional equipment connected.

Has anyone else dealt with these mystery connectors on Ford E450 chassis? I really need to know what this was intended for before I drive myself crazy thinking about it! …more

How to Install Wireless Backup Camera on Towed Vehicle - RV Setup Guide for Safe Towing

Since I'm probably asking a dumb question here, but I'm completely lost on setting up the optimal wireless backup camera configuration for my specific towing setup. I have a 38-foot Class A motorhome that I use to tow my Jeep Gladiator, which has a fiberglass shell topper and a bike rack mounted on the receiver hitch. The bike rack creates a significant blind spot that makes it impossible to see what's happening behind my entire rig when I'm driving.

I'm considering mounting a wireless backup camera somewhere on the rear of the Gladiator to give me visibility past the bike rack and bikes. The challenge is that I need the wireless signal to transmit reliably from the back of the towed vehicle, through approximately 38 feet of motorhome length, to reach a monitor mounted on my dashboard. The signal would need to pass through the fiberglass rear cap of my motorhome and maintain a clear connection while we're traveling down the highway.

What's the best approach for this type of long-distance wireless camera setup? Should I mount the camera on top of the shell topper for maximum clearance over the bike rack, and what specifications should I look for in terms of transmission range and power options to ensure reliable operation? …more

RV Heat Pump Amp Draw: How Many Amps Does Your Unit Use?

Turned down a Class A with a heat pump because I'm terrified of being that neighbor constantly tripping breakers — am I overthinking this? We're plugged into 30-amp service at home while I pretend to know what I'm doing with all these fancy RV features.

Basically, I need to know how many amps this heat pump is going to suck down when it kicks on. I'm already running the usual suspects - fridge, lights, maybe the TV so I can ignore my responsibilities - and I'd rather not find out the hard way that I'm overloading everything. Anyone know the typical amp draw so I can at least look semi-competent when explaining to my spouse why the power keeps cutting out? …more

RV AC Not Cooling Properly? Complete Troubleshooting & Repair Guide

Standing here after replacing my RV's AC compressor yesterday but it's still barely blowing cold air — did I mess something up? My dual AC setup absolutely crushes it when it's blazing hot outside - we're talking 95+ degree days and it'll knock the temp down a solid 15 degrees no problem. But now that the weather's cooled off to like 70-75 degrees, the darn things can't even keep up with the outdoor temperature. Set the thermostat to 69, outside temp is 69, and I'm still sitting at 75+ inside the rig.

I actually tested it yesterday - turned off the AC completely, opened windows and ran exhaust fans, and got better cooling than with the AC running! Now I'm doing this weird combo of AC plus open windows just to stay comfortable. What gives? Why would my AC units lose their mojo when the weather gets easier on them? Is this some kind of airflow issue or what? …more

RV Heat Pump Turns On Then Immediately Shuts Off - 3 Common Causes & Fixes

Starting to wonder if my 8-year-old rooftop heat pump that's cycling on and off constantly is worth repairing or if I should just replace the damn thing? It kicks on for literally one second, then shuts right back off. This just started happening yesterday.

RV Underbody Lighting Installation: Complete DIY Guide

I'm wondering if anyone else walked out this morning and spotted how embarrassingly bland their RV's underside looks compared to those slick LED setups online? My husband and I are pretty new to the RV world and I've been wanting to add some nice ambient lighting underneath our Class A motorhome. I think it would look really cool when we're set up at campsites in the evenings. I've seen other RVers with these gorgeous blue or white lights that make their rigs look so professional. We're definitely beginners when it comes to electrical work, so I'm hoping someone can walk me through what's involved. Is this something we can tackle ourselves or should we find a professional? Any product recommendations would be super helpful too. Thanks so much for your patience with us newbies! …more

TST TPMS Display Comparison: Color vs Mono Screen Visibility in Sunlight

Tried reading my TST TPMS display yesterday and got hit with unreadable tiny numbers, impossible sun glare, AND zero confidence in what I'm actually seeing.

Right now, my current mono display is getting increasingly difficult to read - I can't tell if it's the display fading or my eyesight changing. I've already tried some DIY fixes like making a custom shade for the display and using tape to enhance the backlight, but it's still not great.

Specifically, I'm concerned about dashboard visibility in sunlight. Does anyone know if the color TST displays are actually more visible than the mono ones in sunny conditions? I'm trying to decide if it's worth spending the extra money for color, or if mono would work just as well. Any advice would be really helpful! …more

Class A RV Tripping GFCI on Hot Days - Solar Inverter Fix

During these scorching summer days, this complete RV newbie is baffled why my Class A's GFCI keeps tripping every few days and I'm totally lost. The RV isn't plugged directly into the GFCI outlet, but there's one on the same circuit that keeps popping.

I'm wondering if my solar inverter might be the culprit since it seems heat-related? Or could this be pointing to a battery that's starting to go bad? Just trying to figure out if this is normal wear and tear or something I need to address before it gets worse. …more
