About to drop $2,800 on my Cummins ISL throwing code 1896 for EGR valve controller out of calibration and wondering if I can tackle this myself. Planning to pull and clean the EGR valve controller to see if that clears it up.

Now I'm staring down the barrel of an engine replacement and trying not to have my own mechanical failure when I see the potential costs. I've heard Jasper engines mentioned, but I'm honestly clueless about what I should expect to pay for a complete engine replacement on this beast.

Before I dive into these multiple DEF system diagnostic codes on my 2017 Tiffin with the Cummins L9 450HP, I need to know which short to ground fault to tackle first. From what I've researched, it seems like the DEF head assembly might be the culprit, but I'm not entirely certain. The problems started about two weeks ago and have gotten progressively worse. Apparently my 2001 Fleetwood Discovery has a failing CAT 330 diesel engine, transmission issues, AND electrical problems all hitting at once. Had battery failure and explosion, replaced batteries. Engine runs smooth but CEL still flashing. Code shows SID 253 FMI 2 - voltage/calibration memory related.

Local tech says needs CAT ET software to clear codes. Need mobile CAT technician in eastern North Carolina area. Is this safe to drive or should I wait for service? Any dealer recommendations for mobile CAT service? …more
