Onan 5500 Generator Problems: Complete Repair Guide 2024

Spent three hours testing my 2014 Hurricane's Onan 5500 gen getting 11.8 volts output when every manual says it should be 12+ volts! Here's the weird part - when I disconnect the remote harness, the generator fires right up and purrs like a kitten. But the second I plug that remote connection back in, boom - both the remote start light AND the generator start light come on, and then... nothing. Won't start at all.

The really bizarre symptom is this chattering from the fuel pump when the remote is connected. I can literally feel the fuel line jumping around when I put my hand on it. It's like the pump is having some kind of seizure or something!

I'm guessing this has to be some kind of electrical issue between the control board and the remote system, but I've never seen anything quite like this before. Anyone dealt with this specific combo of symptoms on an Onan 5500? Really hoping there's a known fix because pulling this thing out of the RV again would be a major pain! …more

Ford V10 Triton Engine Maintenance Guide: EGR Delete vs Regular Service Tips

Spent years doing regular EGR maintenance on my old gas motorhome without issues — but this 2007 Fleetwood 31' Tioga with Ford V10 Triton has me second-guessing everything. I keep reading conflicting information about EGR delete procedures on V10 engines, and I'm worried I might make things worse if I mess with it.

Is the EGR delete modification actually necessary on this 2007 3-valve V10, or am I overthinking this? I don't want to void any warranties or create problems that weren't there before. Would I be better off just sticking to regular maintenance instead of modifications? I'm looking for reassurance that I'm taking the right approach to keep this engine running reliably for years to come. …more

Ford F53 V10 Bypass Oil Filter Installation: Best Mounting Locations for RV Chassis

Walked out to check my oil analysis results and they're showing 15-micron contaminants, but everything says my 2003 F53 V10's factory filter catches down to 25 microns. I've been reading about how these can help extend oil life and keep things cleaner, but I'm honestly not sure where the best place to mount one would be.

I've seen some people mention sandwich adapters at the original filter location, remote mounting blocks, and even tapping directly into the engine block. As someone who's still learning, I don't want to mess this up or create problems down the road. What's considered the best practice for mounting location on the F53 V10? I'd really appreciate some guidance from those who have done this before. …more

Best Oil Filter for Ford V10 RV Engine - Complete Guide

After walking out to my RV this morning, I spotted my Ford V10's oil filter looking suspiciously ready for replacement, but I'm completely lost on which one won't break the bank. I keep hearing conflicting advice about which oil filter to run.

Everyone seems to swear by different brands - some say Wix 51348 is the sweet spot, others mention NAPA Gold 1348 (are these the same thing?), and then there's the Mobil 1 M1-210A crowd. At Rock Auto, I noticed Fram filters like TG2 ($6.43), XG2 ($9.50), and HP16 ($12.82), plus a Mobil 1 M1210A at $8.14.

What's the real deal here? Is there actually a 'best' filter for the V10, or am I overthinking this whole thing? I'm also considering adding a bypass oil filter. I just want something reliable that won't break the bank every oil change, especially since this rig sees a lot of highway miles. Is a $23 Amsoil filter really worth three times the price of a Wix? Any recommendations from fellow V10 survivors? …more

E450 V10 Air Filter: How Often to Change on Dusty Roads

Every Saturday I'm planning to tackle my Ford E450 V10's air filter after months of dusty backroad camping — what maintenance schedule should I actually follow? The owner's manual suggests changing the air filter every 30,000 miles, but that seems like a really long interval to me.

I do a fair amount of camping on dusty dirt roads - probably covering about 8-16 miles per month on these conditions to reach remote campsites. I'm worried that all that dust might mean I need to change the filter more frequently than what Ford recommends.

Should I be following a different maintenance schedule given these dusty conditions? And is there anything I should be doing between filter changes to keep things running smoothly? I want to make sure I'm taking proper care of this engine but don't want to over-maintain either. …more

DPF Failure Code: Repair Cost & DIY Options for RV Diesel

According to my diagnostic scan the DPF failure code shouldn't be appearing since regeneration happened just 500 miles ago on my 2022 Holiday Rambler Cummins B6.7. Local Freightliner service center is quoting $6,400 for complete DPF replacement at 38,000 miles.

Before proceeding with this expensive repair, I need to verify: Is this quote within normal range for dealer pricing? Should my 2022 engine still have emissions warranty coverage that would apply to DPF failure? Are there alternative repair options like professional cleaning that might resolve the issue without full replacement?

Looking for technical guidance on the most cost-effective approach to address this DPF failure code before committing to the quoted repair. …more

How to Winterize RV Residential Fridge Water Filter: Remove vs Bypass

How to Winterize RV Residential Fridge Water Filter: Remove vs Bypass

Before winterizing, my RV's residential fridge started making bizarre gurgling sounds from the water filter area that I've never heard before. I had my motorhome winterized professionally, but when I checked afterwards, I noticed they left the water filter in place instead of removing it or installing a bypass plug.

Is this the correct procedure, or should the filter have been removed? I'm worried about potential damage from antifreeze or freezing, but I don't want to second-guess the professionals if this is normal. What's the proper way to handle the water filter during winterization? …more

Onan 4KY Generator Starts Then Dies: Oil Pressure Sensor Troubleshooting Guide

About to sound like a total newbie here, but why does my 2018 Winnebago Spirit's Onan 4KY-26100R generator start perfectly then instantly die when I release the start switch? I suspect it's the oil pressure sensor based on what I've read, but want to confirm this diagnosis before ordering parts. Oil level appears normal. I've tried locating the oil sensor near the oil filler tube on the crankcase, but it's difficult to see or reach. Is there a way to test if the oil pressure sensor is actually the problem? Can I bypass it temporarily to verify that's the issue? …more

RV Oil Filter Adapter Plate: Complete Guide to Function & Installation Explained

I turned my simple RV oil filter change into a disaster when I followed a YouTube tutorial and somehow made everything worse with this "adapter plate" confusion. I've seen it mentioned for V6, V8, and V10 engines, but I'm honestly not sure what it actually does or why it's there.

From what I can gather, it might have something to do with using the same oil filter on different engine types? I'm trying to understand if this is some kind of universal mounting thing that RV manufacturers use, but I don't want to guess and mess something up during maintenance. Could someone explain what this component actually is and why RVs seem to use them across different engine configurations? …more

RV Slides Creeping Out Randomly - Hydraulic Troubleshooting

Called the dealer about my practically new Tiffin Allegro Bay 38AB that's eating through hydraulic fluid because both front slides keep extending randomly. Sometimes it happens while we're driving down the highway, other times after sitting in storage for hours or even days. The weird part? It can also go months without any problems at all. The factory has already inspected everything twice - tested cylinders for internal leakage, checked all hydraulic lines, and even replaced the entire pump and valve assembly with their latest upgraded unit. Still happening! I've crawled under there with a flashlight checking every fitting and connection - bone dry, no hydraulic fluid anywhere. I even killed all 12V power thinking maybe a phantom signal was triggering the solenoids, but nope. Here's what's really puzzling: sometimes just one slide extends, sometimes both. Once we were parked on a serious slope (driver's side maybe 5-6 inches higher) and that slide still crept out uphill against gravity! I'm wondering if weak house batteries could cause the solenoid valves to malfunction? I'm pretty handy with tools and want to tackle this myself since the factory keeps saying there's nothing wrong. …more

RV Transmission Spin-On Filter Conversion Kit Installation Guide

Nobody wants to hear that subtle whining noise coming from their RV's 4R100 transmission with a V10 engine, but here I am wondering if a spin-on filter conversion kit installation might help. My mechanical skills are about as reliable as my RV's slideouts in a rainstorm, but I keep hearing these kits make filter changes easier than finding a level campsite.

I'm seeing all these different kit options online and honestly feeling more confused than a GPS in a tunnel. Do these spin-on filters actually mount in the cooler line (which I believe is a full flow system)? I'm specifically looking for a filter under 10 microns that works with my transmission setup. Are these supposed to work alongside the existing internal filter, or am I about to create an expensive science experiment under my rig? Because let's be real - my track record with 'simple' RV modifications usually ends with me calling a professional and pretending I never touched anything. …more
Adding Ball Valve to 2008 Fleetwood Terra Heater Line - Safe?

Adding Ball Valve to 2008 Fleetwood Terra Heater Line - Safe?

I turned off my RV's cooling system and grabbed my wrench — ready to install a ball valve on my 2008 Fleetwood Terra's heater line but need safety confirmation first. I've been battling what I suspect is a faulty electric heater valve that may not be closing completely when I switch to A/C mode.

The electric valve is expensive to replace and located in an incredibly awkward spot that's driving me crazy to access. I've tried everything - heat detectors, feeling around the lines, you name it - but I still can't definitively tell if it's actually sealing off hot coolant flow when the A/C is running.

Here's my question: Can I safely install a simple manual ball valve in the heater line before the existing electric valve? I'm hoping this would let me manually shut off coolant flow to the heater core when using A/C, essentially doing the job the electric valve should be doing. Will this cause any problems with the cooling system or damage anything? I just need to know if this is a safe solution before I start cutting into lines. …more

RV V10 Engine Dies During Sharp Turns: Troubleshooting Guide

Found myself trying to decide between a fuel pickup issue and electrical problem for my Triton V10 that keeps dying during sharp turns into parking spots and tight corners. The engine drops to approximately 500 RPM before completely shutting down, though it restarts immediately without codes. This occurs on a 2006 F53 chassis with 43,000 miles.

The stalling pattern is consistent with power loss during low-speed turning situations, creating safety concerns due to loss of power-assisted braking and steering. Engine performance is otherwise normal during straight-line driving and highway operation. Need systematic troubleshooting methodology to identify root cause - what are the primary diagnostic steps for V10 stalling specifically during turn scenarios? …more

1989 Ford Tioga 460 EFI Won't Start After Dead Battery Jump

Looked everywhere online but still trying to decide between a fuel pump issue or ECM problem for my 1989 Ford Tioga 460 EFI that won't start after jumping the dead battery. The RV ran smoothly for weeks until I had to jump-start it after leaving lights on overnight. After the jump, the engine fired but immediately died - completely different behavior than its previous reliable starts.

The engine will only stay running when fuel is manually added to the intake, suggesting a fuel delivery problem. Prior to this incident, the fuel system worked flawlessly. The timing correlation between the dead battery jump-start and the fuel system failure seems significant.

What are the most likely causes when a 460 EFI system loses fuel delivery immediately after a battery jump? Could the jump-start procedure have damaged fuel system components, and what should I check first in the fuel pressure circuit? …more
