Ford E450 V10 Reliability: Expected Mileage and Longevity Guide for RV Owners

Nobody prepared me for staring at this 2018 Jayco Greyhawk 29MVP with Ford E450 chassis showing 54,000 miles and wondering if I'm looking at a money pit. The unit appears well-maintained with quality features including auto-leveling, fiberglass roof and nose, plus J-ride suspension. However, the odometer shows 54,000 miles, which exceeds my initial target range.

I need to assess whether this mileage represents significant wear on the E450/V10 drivetrain combination. What is the typical service life expectation for these engines when properly maintained? At what point should mileage become a primary concern versus overall mechanical condition? …more

Prevost vs Newell vs Foretravel vs King Aire: Which to Buy?

My wife and I are drowning in luxury coach research with our $500k-$1M budget and honestly have zero clue what separates Prevost, Newell, Foretravel, and King Aire for full-time living. Primary evaluation criteria include depreciation mitigation over 2-3 year ownership cycle and maintenance reliability metrics.

Specific units under consideration: 2017 Prevost Emerald at $850k with 60k miles, and 2016 Foretravel Realm K3 with low miles at approximately $400k. Also exploring 2021 King Aire and Newell models.

Seeking technical assessment comparing driving performance, interior quality, and reliability across Prevost, Foretravel K3/K4, Newell, and King Aire models. Concerned about potential maintenance requirements on older coaches, preferring newer models with resolved initial manufacturing issues.

Require detailed insights into value retention projections, drivetrain performance, and long-term operational dependability for these luxury coach manufacturers and specific model years. …more

RV Engine Stalling & Transmission Issues - Diagnosis Help

Replaced multiple parts but I'm still standing in the auto parts store aisle staring at diagnostic tools with no clue which one I actually need for my RV's stalling and transmission issues. When I'm cruising and let off the gas, sometimes the RPMs drop like a rock, other times they just hang there until I slow down more. That's weird enough, but here's the real kicker - every now and then the whole engine just dies on me when I'm rolling up to a stop sign or red light. Maybe happens twice in 600 miles or so, so it's not constant but definitely not normal either.

I'm wondering if these two issues are connected somehow? Like could whatever's causing the stalling also be messing with how the transmission acts when I let off the throttle? Really hoping someone has seen this combo before because I'm in Germany and finding RV-specific help is tough.

I'm looking for any insights from folks who might know what could cause this - hoping to get to the bottom of this before it becomes a bigger problem! …more

How to Find Ford Dealers That Service RV Motorhome Chassis - Complete

Staring at my broken-down F53 motorhome with a list of Ford dealers, having no clue which ones actually know how to work on RV chassis. When I was in Knoxville, TN, I encountered several issues including an intermittent engine misfire, a missing front suspension bumper, and a completely missing rear sway bar mount.

I've been calling around to Ford dealerships and most either refuse or say they don't have anyone qualified to work on these chassis. The few places I found are booking months out, which makes me nervous about emergency repairs.

My experience with Paul Miller Ford in Lexington, KY was excellent. Mike, their motorhome advisor, got me in quickly. They diagnosed a burned plug wire, ordered parts, and had me back on the road in just a few days. The repairs were even covered under warranty.

Is there a better way to identify which Ford dealers are actually equipped and willing to service RV chassis? I want to make sure I find reputable places before I actually need them. …more

1986 Fleetwood Jamboree Fridge Repair Guide + Ford 460 Engine Upgrade

Got my third fridge failure this season in my '86 Fleetwood Jamboree with the Ford 460 carbureted engine and I'm done guessing what's wrong. Two main issues:

The fridge isn't working at all. What should I check first for troubleshooting?

Also considering an EFI conversion on the 460 for better fuel economy since gas mileage is brutal. Is this upgrade cost-effective or should I stick with maintaining the carburetor system? …more

Class A vs Super C Motorhome: Complete Comparison Guide 2024

Before I commit to my next RV purchase, I'm trying to decide between a Class A and Super C motorhome after our recent 2+ week, 3K mile trip through PA-OH-KY-NC-VA and back to CT. We have never seen more Super C's. They used to be a bit of a unicorn. This trip, multiples each day and a 1 or 2 at almost every campground.

A friend says it's the more dependable Freightliner drivetrain. If we were to make the swap from a 5th wheel (not likely), it would probably be a Super C. I'm trying to understand why the market seems to be shifting.

I'm looking to understand the technical advantages: Are Super C's really more reliable because of the commercial truck chassis? Is the Freightliner drivetrain genuinely better than traditional motorhome platforms?

Anyone care to share their opinions and experiences with Super C versus Class A motorhomes? …more

Monaco Knight 40 Fuel Economy: Real MPG Numbers When Towing a Car

Our 2012 Monaco Knight DFT 40 GOLD is sitting in the driveway right now with the Jeep hitched behind it, and I can practically see my wallet getting lighter just looking at this setup. We're looking at covering about 1000 miles over the course of the trip, and I'm trying to get realistic expectations for fuel costs and planning fuel stops accordingly.

I've heard wildly different numbers from other RV owners about what kind of fuel economy to expect when towing a vehicle behind a 40-foot diesel pusher like the Monaco Knight. Some people claim they get decent mileage, while others say it's absolutely terrible. I'd love to know what's actually realistic to expect in terms of MPG when towing, and if there are any driving techniques or speed considerations that can help maximize fuel economy on a long trip like this. …more

Complete 4x4 RV Transmission Filter Service Guide - Transfer Case & Differential Maintenance

Since this is the third time this season my 4x4 RV's transmission is acting up, I'm done throwing parts at it without proper filter service knowledge. I've got a 4x4 RV with a 4R100 transmission (2003 V10) that's due for service. I'm wondering if there's anything different about servicing the transmission filter on a 4x4 versus a regular 2WD setup?

Also, since I'm getting under there anyway, should I be thinking about servicing other components while I'm at it? Don't want to miss anything important that could bite me later down the road. Thanks for any guidance! …more

Cummins ISM 500HP at 142K Miles: High Mileage or Just Getting Started?

Planning to buy my first diesel pusher and I'm completely clueless whether 142,187 miles on this 2005 Cummins ISM 500HP is considered high mileage. The coach is equipped with a Cummins ISM 500 horsepower engine paired with an Allison MH 4000 6-speed transmission. While I've done some research on these powertrains, I'm getting mixed opinions about what constitutes "high mileage" for this particular combination.

Some people are telling me that anything over 100K miles is getting into risky territory, while others say these commercial-grade engines are just getting broken in at that point. I want to make sure I'm not walking into a money pit, but I also don't want to pass up a good coach if the mileage number is scaring me unnecessarily.

What's the realistic lifespan expectation for the Cummins ISM 500HP and Allison MH4000 combination? Should 142K miles be a red flag that makes me walk away, or is this actually considered moderate mileage for these heavy-duty components? I'm trying to determine if I should focus more on the maintenance history and overall condition rather than getting hung up on the odometer reading. …more

SDI E-Clik Stabilizer Reviews: Real RV Owner Experiences & Performance Guide

The third time this season my F-53 motorhome has been rocking like a boat at campgrounds and I'm done pretending the SDI E-Clik stabilizer system isn't worth investigating. The body roll on highway drives has me white-knuckling the steering wheel, and I'm worried about safety for my family.

I keep seeing mixed information online - some people seem to love it, others say it's just marketing hype. I don't want to throw money at a problem that needs a more serious suspension overhaul, but I also can't afford a complete suspension replacement right now.

Can anyone share honest, real-world experiences with the E-Clik system? Does it actually improve handling enough to notice, or am I setting myself up for disappointment? I need realistic expectations before I commit to this purchase. …more

RV Water Crossing: How to Avoid Engine Damage and Recovery Steps

Woke up to my Winnebago Ekko surrounded by floodwater above the wheel hubs, the engine is completely dead, AND there's moisture creeping into places it definitely shouldn't be. While I haven't noticed any unusual noises or driving behavior, I want to be proactive about potential water exposure damage.

I've checked that the oil isn't milky and brake fluid looks normal. However, I'm concerned about potential impacts on hubs, bearing grease, brake fluid, differential fluid, and transmission fluid from this water exposure.

Has anyone else with an Ekko experienced similar flooding and have recommendations for post-water exposure inspection? Am I being overly cautious about checking various components? I'm hoping to get some expert advice on what specific things I should examine to ensure no long-term damage occurred. …more
