About to drop $2,800 on my Cummins ISL throwing code 1896 for EGR valve controller out of calibration and wondering if I can tackle this myself. Planning to pull and clean the EGR valve controller to see if that clears it up.

Around 30 years into owning my 1995 Ford F53 with the 460 7.5L engine, I'm completely lost trying to locate the EGR and PCV valves. There are two valves that I can't identify - I'm pretty sure they're related to emissions control based on where they're located, but I'm not certain.

I think one might be an EGR valve and the other could be a PCV valve, but honestly I'm not confident in my identification. Should these valves be making any noise during normal operation? I want to make sure everything is working properly, but as someone newer to this, I'd really appreciate some guidance on what these components actually are and how they should behave. …more

Around two years ago I switched from expensive Blue DEF to Walmart's Super Tech DEF on my old rig without problems — but this new motorhome seems pickier. My buddy says all DEF is basically the same stuff, but I don't want to mess around with my diesel pusher's emissions system.

Is Super Tech really equivalent to Blue DEF quality-wise? Are there actual differences between brands or is it just marketing? Worth switching to save some cash or should I stick with what I know works? …more
