Your MaxxAir/Fantastic roof vent fan is most likely experiencing a moisture sensor malfunction or rain sensor false triggering despite showing "rain sense off." This common issue occurs when shower humidity creates condensation that triggers internal sensors, causing the fan to shut down and close automatically.

Why This Happens

False Moisture Detection: The most common cause is condensation from shower steam triggering internal moisture sensors that aren't the same as the rain sensor shown on your remote. These sensors can become overly sensitive or malfunction due to age and humidity exposure.

Corroded Connections: RV roof vents are exposed to temperature extremes and moisture, causing wire connections and sensor contacts to corrode over time. This can create false signals that trigger the auto-close function.

Control Board Issues: The circuit board may have moisture damage or component failure that causes erratic behavior. This is especially common in older Fantastic Fan models (which MaxxAir acquired).

Sensor Calibration Problems: Some models have internal sensitivity adjustments that can drift over time, making the system overly reactive to normal humidity levels.

Making It Right

1. Turn off power - Safety first! Locate the 12V fuse or disconnect for your roof vent and turn it off/remove it before beginning any work.

3. Inspect the rain sensor - Even though your remote shows "rain sense off," locate the small rain sensor (usually a small electronic component or sensor pad) on the exterior housing. Clean it thoroughly with alcohol and a cotton swab to remove any corrosion or debris.
4. Check internal moisture sensors - Look for additional moisture detection circuits inside the motor housing (note: not all models have separate internal sensors). These may be separate from the rain sensor and can malfunction independently. Clean all visible contacts with contact cleaner.
5. Examine wiring connections - Inspect all wire connections for corrosion, looseness, or damage. Pay special attention to connections near the motor and control board. Tighten any loose connections and clean corroded terminals.
6. Test the manual override - With power still off, carefully manually operate the opening mechanism to ensure it moves freely. Keep fingers clear as the vent may close suddenly. Apply a small amount of marine-grade silicone or weatherproof PTFE lubricant to pivot points if needed.
7. Check the control board - Look for signs of moisture damage, corrosion, or burnt components on the circuit board. If you see green corrosion or burnt areas, the board may need replacement.
8. Restore power and test - Restore power (reconnect fuse/disconnect) and test the fan operation. Try running it during a shower to see if the problem persists.
